What Is a Liver Abscess?

Liver abscess is a common liver infection, especially in India. It happens when germs infect the liver tissue, killing a local area and forming a pus-filled pocket. Because the liver filters out bad stuff, it's exposed and vulnerable. We diagnose it easily with an ultrasound or a CT scan. Treatment depends on the size and how sick the patient is. Common liver abscess symptoms include fever, right upper abdominal pain, nausea, loss of appetite, and fatigue. Early diagnosis is critical to prevent serious complications like sepsis or liver damage. At IRFacilities, we find it quick with ultrasound or CT. Then, using imaging to guide us, we drain the pus through a very thin tube (catheter). It's minimally invasive – way easier on the patient than surgery—and we usually add antibiotics. This gets you feeling better faster.

Symptoms of Liver Abscess

Liver abscess can present with a variety of symptoms depending on the severity of the disease. Symptoms can be:

  • pain in the abdomen on the right side.
  • fever with shivering and chills.
  • loss of appetite
  • jaundice
  • deranged digestion
  • Pain in the lower abdomen is associated with bowel infection.
  • Occasionally, severe pain can be seen if an abscess or bowel rupture is present.
  • Septicemia can occur if infection spreads into the blood.

Doctors can assess the signs with blood tests and clinical evaluation. Symptoms of abscess can be variable, and urgent attention is required from the doctor to prevent complications.

Causes & Diagnosis of Liver Abscess

Liver abscess is an infectious aetiology where a pus collection is present in the liver. There can be a variety of causes for the infections in the liver. Infection can spread to the liver from a variety of sources. Bowel infection spreading to the liver is one of the most common. Infection can also spread from the blood and retrospectively from the bile duct into the liver, where they are called biliary abscesses. Infection can occasionally spread from adjacent organs like the lung and kidney into the liver. Different infectious agents can come to the liver. One of the most common contagious causes can be amebic and bacterial agents. Amebic agents commonly spread from the intestine and appendix.

Diagnosis of the abscess is always clinical and supported by blood tests and sonography, and CT scan-like imaging modalities. In some cases, needle aspiration with FNAC may be required for the diagnosis.

Treatment for Liver Abscess Drainage

Treatment of the liver abscess requires a holistic approach, which includes proper diagnosis followed by adequate antibiotic coverage and drainage of the abscess using pigtail drainage. Diagnosis remains important to characterise the type of infection. It can be drawn out as small pus from the abscess, which can help in determining the type of agent involved in the infection.

Once the diagnosis is made, the next step is combined therapy of antibiotics with abscess drainage. Abscess drainage is a specialized job done by an interventional radiologist. Here, under local anesthesia, the tube is placed into the pyo under ultrasound guidance. Once the position is confirmed, the tube remains in the abscess for a few days so that pus keeps coming. Serial scans are done to evaluate the pus drainage. Once drained, the tube is removed. Antibiotic coverage remains throughout the period of time.

At times, multiple tubes may have to be placed if multiple abscesses are there. IRfacilities are a group of experts in interventional radiology who provide holistic care in complete treatment. The group deals with end-to-end care in providing the treatment with complete admission and relief. In most cases, the abscess and infection are controlled in 7 to 10 days with aggressive treatment.

Liver Abscess Treatment Cost & Recovery Time

Recovery

At IRFacilities, liver abscess recovery time usually takes 2–3 weeks. Dr. Sandeep Sharma explains: Small abscesses (≤5 cm) treated only with antibiotics often heal in 10–15 days. Larger ones (≥5 cm) needing drainage and antibiotics take 3–4 weeks. Your overall health matters – diabetes or complications can slow recovery. Our team tracks your healing with follow-up scans. Feeling feverish or having pain? Tell us immediately. Stick to medications and rest well. Most patients recover fully under Dr. Sharma’s care.

My name is Vikram Singh and I am from Ambala. Percutaneous drainage saved me from surgery. The doctor showed an ultrasound where the abscess was, and put a thin tube to drain the infection. A little discomfort only. Staff changed dressing daily. After 5 days the tube was removed, fever was gone. Very happy with the treatment.
